Our Noble Cause
Spencer is our son.
He was thirteen years old when he passed away after a courageous battle with pediatric cancer.
He was known for his determination, quick wit, adventurous spirit, and the deep love he had for the people around him. Even while facing challenges that most people could never imagine, he continued to inspire everyone he met with his courage, resilience, and unwavering hope.
While we would give anything to have Spencer with us today, we've chosen to honor his life by helping others. What began as our family's way of carrying his legacy forward has grown into a mission dedicated to creating hope and opportunity for families facing pediatric cancer and for future healthcare professionals who will one day care for them.
Today, This Is The Way Foundation carries that mission forward through scholarships, community events, acts of service, and partnerships that encourage, support, and uplift others. We believe one life can make a difference.
One act of kindness can change a day. One opportunity can change a future.
Through the generosity of donors, sponsors, volunteers, and community partners, Spencer's legacy continues to grow. Together, we strive to live out the values he taught us every day: courage, compassion, perseverance, and hope.
This foundation is more than a way to remember our son.

Spencer was honored by the City of Brandon with an official proclamation declaring January 3, 2024, as Spencer Thorsland Day, recognizing his bravery, courage, and the inspiration he brought to people of all ages through his faith and strength.

Vizsla
The Story behind Thor Vizsla
Spencer had a remarkable imagination. Like so many kids, he loved stories of courage, adventure, and heroes. One of his favorites was The Mandalorian.
Inspired by his love of Star Wars, Spencer created his own Mandalorian identity: Thor Vizsla.
He borrowed "Thor" from his family name, Thorsland, while also embracing the strength and courage of the legendary superhero. He chose "Vizsla" after one of the great Mandalorian clans, whose warriors were known for their loyalty, honor, and unwavering commitment to one another.
It became more than a character.
It became a symbol of hope, courage, and resilience during the hardest chapter of Spencer's life.
An Unexpected Friendship
Through a connection made by Spencer's physical therapist, he received a personal video message from actress Emily Swallow, who portrays The Armorer in The Mandalorian. What began as a thoughtful surprise soon grew into a genuine friendship.
When Emily visited Sioux Falls for a pediatric cancer event, she surprised Spencer with a custom Mandalorian helmet based on his own design, officially bringing Thor Vizsla to life. The two stayed in touch, and when Spencer invited her to return for Halloween, she did exactly that—flying to South Dakota and arriving at his front door in full costume.
As Spencer's cancer returned and he entered hospice care, Emily came back again. She spent time with him watching movies, shopping together, and simply being present during one of the hardest seasons of his life. She later honored Spencer by recording a special song for his Celebration of Life and continues to stay connected with the Huml family today.
Emily's friendship reminded us that sometimes the greatest gift we can give someone isn't something we buy—it's simply showing up.
Our FamilY's Journey
There isn't a day that goes by that we don't think about Spencer. We miss his smile, his determination, and the way he could make us laugh even during the hardest days. While the pain of losing him will always remain part of our story, so will the incredible love, kindness, and hope he inspired in so many people.
This foundation was built on that hope.
It's our way of honoring Spencer's life by helping others—supporting families walking a similar road and investing in compassionate healthcare professionals who will care for future patients with skill, empathy, and heart.
