This Is The Way Foundation was created to honor the life and legacy of Spencer Thorsland, a courageous young man from Brandon, SD who battled cancer for over three years. On January 8, 2024, at the age of 13, Spencer gained his angel wings, leaving behind an inspiring story of resilience, hope, and kindness.
During his journey, Spencer worked with countless medical professionals including nurses, lab technicians, doctors, surgeons, ambulance drivers, pilots, child life specialists… just to name a few. The loving care given by these amazing individuals inspired Spencer to dream of becoming either a trauma or plastic surgeon. |

The Eventually Scholarship, Our first initiative, is a scholarship to honor Spencer’s dream by supporting Brandon Valley students pursuing further education in the medical field.
Spencer often said: “Eventually, cancer will be defeated. Eventually, we’ll find a cure. Eventually, we’ll all be healed.” By empowering the next generation of medical professionals, starting right here in Brandon, we hope to inspire solutions and healing in the fight against cancer. To make this happen, we need your help to build the scholarship fund. The target is $100,000. Together, we can establish an endowment account that can continue funding an annual scholarship indefinitely. Our goal is to offer the first scholarship to the BV class of 2026. Your support is greatly appreciated. |

This Is The Way Foundation has been officially granted tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This means that all donations made to the foundation are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
